Home automation with the Piper nv Smart Home Security System
Smart home technology is one of the best ways to protect your home and family and the Piper nv security system is both a nanny cam and a security alarm system.
Once you have purchased the Piper nv system, you can extend its usefulness by adding on Piper’s Z-wave home automation accessories to control the lights and home appliances remotely via your smartphone, or set up an automated schedule to save you that extra trip home.
The most commonly bought additional accessories are the Aeon Labs Z-wave Door/Window sensor and the Piper Smart Switch or the Aeon Labs Z-wave Smart Switch. In fact, any z-wave accessory will integrate with the Piper system.
Stay in touch with your family at home
With 2-way communication, this home security device can easily be used as a nanny cam, keeping you in touch with your children and elderly relatives at home. Talk to them when they are having dinner, catch up with their day or help the kids with their homework and you can pan and tilt the camera around the room and zoom in for a closer look as well.
Yes, you can do all of that on the phone, but being able to see them makes all the difference. You can even talk to your pets when they are home alone and tell them you won’t be long or if they are behaving badly, you can tell them to stop!
Alert notifications, powerful siren and battery backup
With both sound and motion detection (not all nanny cams or home security systems have both sound and motion alerts), you will receive instant alert notifications on your smartphone if there is any movement or noise in your home when no-one is at home.
You can customize these alerts so that you are not alerted all the time by the noise or movement of your pets when they are inside your home. If someone does break into your home you can set the siren to go off immediately or set a delay, for example 10 seconds after video capture starts.
You can even set the siren to go off if someone opens a door or window in your home – if you have the added Z-wave accessories mentioned above. The Piper nv Smart Home Security System is extremely versatile and to top everything off, it also has a battery backup, or if the power goes off or an intruder unplugs the Piper from the power outlet, it will still record video and set off the sirens.
Temperature, light and humidity sensors
With the Piper system you also have sensors for the ambient temperature, light and humidity, as well as night time vision.
Using the free app you can customize all of these sensors, so that you are instantly alerted if there are any changes that you want to know about at home.
Portable security system and easy set-up
Since the Piper system acts like a nanny cam, you don’t have to hard wire it into your home. This means that it is fully portable and if you move you can take it with you – fabulous for renters, people who live in condos and apartments or people who move around frequently.
The Piper nv Smart Home Security System is very easy to install, because all you need to do is to download the app to your mobile device, plug in your Piper camera and then follow the instructions on the app to connect to your home WiFi.
One point to note is that you can only control the Piper system using the app, there is no web based control panel.
No monthly fees
Unlike many other home security systems and nanny cams, with the Piper Smart Home System you don’t have any monthly fees or service fees.
Once you buy the system and any accessories you want, the video clips are automatically stored to the cloud at no cost.
The problem is that you only have 30 second clips of any events stored on the cloud. So if you want more than this, then you need to investigate another home security system, for example the Nest Cam, but this will cost you monthly fees.
Points to note about the Piper nv Smart Home Security System
If the Piper security system detects a breach in security, it records a 30 second real time video of the event and then rearms again in 15 seconds. During this 15 seconds the camera is not recording, but you can rearm the system remotely using your smartphone.
You can store up to 1000 30 second clips in the cloud and then it starts to overwrite them, but you can download them to your mobile device and save them on your PC.
The Piper security system doesn’t connect with other third party home automation systems, but you can expand its usefulness with additional window and door sensors and light switches.
Online customer reviews
One of the frequent complaints with the Piper nv Smart Home Security System is that if the power goes off, you have to manually reset the devices. This makes no sense when you are not at home or you have installed the system in a holiday home.
Another problem is that the latest app upgrade seems to have caused a lot of customers grief due to constant lost connections and network drop outs. Hopefully this problem will be resolved, but as of August 2016 – some customers are still having problems.
On a more positive note, customers love how easy the Piper is to set up, that they can talk to their family at home and all of the customizable features.
I love being able to speak to my children (and even my pets) through the camera. I’m considering adding piper accessories to utilize piper as a smart home hub.
We can keep and eye on our dogs, turn lights on and off, check temperatures, all from our smartphones. And the versatility of possible notifications is superb.
This was purchased for our new granddaughter, whom we will be babysitting. However we have been using it for our Dog – as a “learning experience”. We found that we actually like it for the dog and may even purchase another one for the baby!!
We currently use the camera along with door sensors, a garage door monitor/opener and a smart light switch. Sometimes the app can be a bit slow to respond, but I have a feeling that has more to do with our infamously horrible internet provider than it does with the piper system. To remedy this, we used the “IFTTT (if this then that)” app to automatically set or disarm the alarm based on our proximity to the house.
Our homeowner’s insurance actually qualifies this as an official home alarm because the door sensors we added have an audible alarm when set off, which is great because that saves money on our homeowner’s insurance bill!
The doors are alarmed, the lights come on and piper watches the house, the studio, and the shop! We can keep an eye on the dog when away!
My final thoughts on the Piper nv Smart Home Security System
The Piper nv Smart Home Security System is much more than a simple nanny cam and can readily be re-purposed as a home security system, as well as keeping a protective eye on your family at home.
You have customizable sound and motion alerts, temperature, light and humidity sensors, a 105 db siren and it integrates with other Z-wave accessories in your home (window and door alarms, power switches and dimmers).
The combination of a nanny cam and a home security system is hard to beat and with all of its features, the Piper is just about perfect – except for the occasional issue with connectivity.
