If the Piper security system detects a breach in security, it records a 30 second real time video of the event and then rearms again in 15 seconds. During this 15 seconds the camera is not recording, but you can rearm the system remotely using your smartphone.

You can store up to 1000 x 30 second clips in the cloud and then it starts to overwrite them, but you can download them to your mobile device and save them on your PC.

The Piper security system doesn’t connect with other third party home automation systems, but you can expand its usefulness with additional window and door sensors and light switches.

One of the frequent complaints with the Piper nv Smart Home Security System is that if the power goes off, you have to manually reset the devices.

This makes no sense when you are not at home or you have installed the system in a holiday home. On the other hand, the Canary has an automatic rearming feature, so if the camera looses power, it rearms once the power is turned on again.

FYI: You can only access the live feeds of the Piper using your smart phone or tablet (iOS and Android), you can’t access live video streaming on your PC. On a more positive note, customers love how easy the Piper is to set up, that they can talk to their family at home and all of the customizable features.

I love being able to speak to my children (and even my pets) through the camera. I’m considering adding piper accessories to utilize piper as a smart home hub.
We can keep and eye on our dogs, turn lights on and off, check temperatures, all from our smartphones. And the versatility of possible notifications is superb.
This was purchased for our new granddaughter, whom we will be babysitting. However we have been using it for our Dog – as a “learning experience”. We found that we actually like it for the dog and may even purchase another one for the baby!!
We currently use the camera along with door sensors, a garage door monitor/opener and a smart light switch. Sometimes the app can be a bit slow to respond, but I have a feeling that has more to do with our infamously horrible internet provider than it does with the piper system. To remedy this, we used the “IFTTT (if this then that)” app to automatically set or disarm the alarm based on our proximity to the house.
Our homeowner’s insurance actually qualifies this as an official home alarm because the door sensors we added have an audible alarm when set off, which is great because that saves money on our homeowner’s insurance bill!
The doors are alarmed, the lights come on and piper watches the house, the studio, and the shop! We can keep an eye on the dog when away!
